‘Kicking in Danger’ features Chif Rheinhart, a country singer who also played forward pocket for the Barrackville Bandicoots. The song is about a Shorty, a small forward in a game of country footy that's headed for a draw, who thinks for a second that he's won the game. Unfortunately, he looks a complete nong instead!
lyrics
Well, let me tell you a story about Shorty
Bunking off in the forward pocket in the dying seconds of the local derby
Scores level, headed for a draw
Well, it was a dirty day for the footy
Three days of rain had turned the paddock to flood
From the first bloody bounce the guernseys of both teams
Were the colours of the bloody mud
Red time in the final quarter
Teams locked 3:7:25
There hadn’t been a score for a quarter or more
Not a point to keep the game alive
It was the last game of the season
Between two teams from neighbouring towns
All 36 players just dead on their feet
Waiting for the siren to sound (reckon they were thinking of the pub)
When the pill squirted out of a rolling ruck
Then cleared by a mongrel punt
Flew overhead through the goal square
Wobbling like a bloody drunk
And they all leapt up
the halfback cleared with a mighty punch
trying to find the boundary line
And it seemed like the season was done
But fortune turns like a flip of a coin
Thrown up by a twist of fate
The game’s not done ‘til the siren blows
Never say too little too late….
Aha, aha
Here comes Shorty
Freezing cold in the forward pocket
Shorty felt his moment might have arrived
He’d been shut down all day by a bigger man
Who’d done a hammy ‘round ¾ time (poor bugger)
Well, Shorty just started calling for it
In a rush of adrenalin
He found himself flat out running a lead
With the Sherrin coming steaming in
Well the ball was a bloody grubber
And it skidded past with a thud
Oh, Shorty and his man both turned to goal
Studs slipping in the bloody mud
Shorty made it first by a second
The ball bobbled up and just hovered there
His man went to spoil; Shorty shanked
A soccer from the middle of the air…
And then time stood still
And the barrackers began to roar
Before the siren blew
It went through for a minor score
That’s how luck depends on the flight of a ball
Shanked off of the shin of fate
He’d only gone and won the bloody game
Never say too little too late
Shorty knew he’d be a local legend
The win snatched right at the bitter end
He knew for years he’d never pay for a beer
And he’d have to tell the story again and again and again
But then the world stood still, the penny dropped
His dreams came crashing in
‘Cause the players and the crowd and the bloody umpire
All stood there laughing at him
He didn’t know why, for a second
But then his best mate laughed
Mate, you look like a bit of a nong
Did you hear the whistle blow?
You were pinged for kicking in danger!
And you just went and bloody played on
That’s how luck depends on the bounce of a ball
Shanked off of the boot of fate
Never say it’s over until the siren blows
Never say too little too late
No, never say it’s over until the siren blows
Never say it
Don’t say it
Too little too late

what an unexpected thrill to stumble across this thick slice of my youth while deep browsing on Bandcamp. Heavily tinged with personal nostalgia but regardless this is a spectacular, exciting, snarling pop masterpiece. If the Beatles had first emerged in the wonderful 90s Aussie alternative scene this might be how they'd sound. Thank you for reissuing this - I haven't listened in at least 10 years (I had searched on Spotify but they weren't on there at the time) but found myself singing along Pijo

This is the sort of punk album 99% of US acts would give their left nut to put out!! And TR brings an outstanding melodic element and some cracking vocals and lyrics! What a great collection of tunes!!! Get this album up ya, and then pass it on to your gen Z kids, mates!!! Ralph Douglas
